What is Medical
Acupuncture?
Traditional Chinese Medicine includes acupuncture as one of its therapies. Traditionally acupuncture involves the insertion of very thin needles into points along the meridians of the body. The meridians are where energy (Qi) flows. When a meridian is blocked, there is dis-ease and unblocking these pathways with acupuncture, restores the flow of energy creating a balance in the body.

Apart from needles, laser (a single beam of light) can be used to stimulate these points painlessly.

Other modalities include but are not limited to moxibustion (heat) and electroacupuncture.

In Western medicine, the acupuncture points correspond with points at which small nerve bundles penetrate the fascia. There is scientific evidence that acupuncture works by multiple neurological pathways being stimulated in the spinal cord and brain causing a cascade of neurotransmitters and hormones to be released and alleviate dis-ease.

Sue uses both needles and laser. The needles should not hurt once inserted, but laser is completely painless. Sue uses lasers for both needle-phobic patients and another powerful laser for her work in musculoskeletal pain.

There are microsystems on the body such as the ear and scalp that can be used to treat various ailments and you may find that you leave with a little bead on your ear as part of your management.
